Congratulations to Zach Clarke and Zuri Prince, who were both named the Boys' and

Girls' Distric Soccer Players of the Year.

They were chosen among all the players in the

District by the Athletic Directors of each school represented in our District. This is a huge

accomplishment for them individually and for us collectively as a school.

Rome Gonsoulin was recently named the winner of the State Bar essay/speech

competition. Congratulations, Rome!`

Elisha Lalani and Josh Barlow each recently won their divisions of the Optimist Club

Regional competition in Surgarland, completing the second competition on their way to

the final competition May 8. At that time, they will be competing for a $2,500

scholarship. Congratulations for their accomplishments so far and best of luck to each of

these students

doubles tennis tournament

 

Kelly Tops Optimist Club Competition

Several Kelly students placed in the Optimist Club Oratory

Contest held March 23 in Beaumont. In the

boy’s division, Josh Barlow placed first, and Jared Scheurich

placed 2nd. In the girl’s division, Elisha Lalani

placed 1st, Melanie Bransford placed 2nd, and Lexia Knowles placed

3rd. Josh and Elisha will move to

the next level to compete in Sugarland at the regional

competition April 17. Congratulations to each of

these students for representing Kelly so well!

Citizen Bee News

Jacob Ryall, Joseph Sigur, and Ben Yett participated in the

Southeast Texas Citizen Bee competition at Lamar State College –

Port Arthur on Thursday, March 04, 2010. Ben Yett placed fourth

out of a field of thirty contestants. Congratulations, Ben!

Anchors Assist at YMBL Rodeo

On March 24, Sara Weighmann, Taylor Wolfrom, Mary

Catherine Clark, Laura Broussard, Sara Glyn Bean, Courtney

Laughlin, Kathryn Phelan, Catherine Holtmyer, Michele Morris,

Catherine Draths, Lauren Holland, and Kalah Fulcher, volunteered

to help at the special kids’ day at the YMBL Rodeo. They

assisted patrons in getting up and down the stairways before

and after the rodeo and distributed sack lunches to everyone.

The girls all agreed that it was a very rewarding experience to

help those with special needs enjoy a day at the rodeo

 

Choir wins "Best in Festival" trophy at Heritage Festival,

San Antonio this weekend


MKCHS Varsity Choir was rated "Gold first division" in both categories

within which we were entered this past weekend in the Heritage Festival

at Fiesta Texas, San Antonion. From thirteen different states with many

different choirs in competition and concert, choirs were judged in

classes determined by the size of the high school. In addition to those

high marks from the judges, our Kelly varsity choir brought home several

recognitions and honors, including

1. a second place plaque for the Chamber/Gospel Choir division, and

2. a first place plaque for the Concert choir division of our class 1A;

3. a Sweepstakes trophy based on those judges marks,

4. a recognition of our directors and an invitation to the Festival of

Gold at Carnegie Hall, New York City, which is an "invitation only"

concert next year; and

5. The trophy for the most outstanding choir at the festival, which

includes all choirs of all sizes and types.

Congratulations, Voice of Kelly High School! And good luck at TAPPS

State next month.

Kelly Sweeps Law Day Competition!

For the first time since Kelly began competing in the

Law Day Speech Contest in the 1990's, Kelly swept

all three winning spots in the Jefferson County Bar Association

Law Day Speech Contest held March 23

at the Jefferson County Courthouse. Rome Gonsoulin placed

1st in the competition, receiving a $1,000

prize. Bryant Windham placed 2nd, receiving $700, and

Salimah Jasani placed 3rd, receiving $500.

Congratulations to these students. They will be recognized at

the Jefferson County Law Day activities

May 7.

• Congratulations to Carson Coffman, who was

selected by the Awards Committee at Kelly High

School to attend the American Legion Bluebonnet

Girls’ State Conference at Texas Lutheran College

in Seguin, Texas, the first week in June. Each

Texas high school is given the opportunity to select

one junior girl to represent the school. Also

selected by Kelly as an Alternate is Yasmine Afshar.


• Many thanks to Rachel Barron, Duyen Do, and

Jared East, who organized and assisted with our

recent blood drive. They did a fantastic job!


• Congratulations to Connor Hargroder, who

was chosen from a field of more than 200 to be a UCA

cheerleader and will be joining the staff this

summer to work with cheer squads at summer camps!


• Congratulations to the following Varsity Choir

members who sang in the TAPPS Houston Regional

Vocal Solo & Ensemble Competition at St. Pius in Houston

on February 27. These students received

superior ratings (I) and will advance to state,

which will be held in Belton on April 16. To qualify for

state, students were required to receive a superior rating on

a class 1 solo, which is the most difficult

level on the Prescribed Music List. Over half of these students

sang a classical solo of this level

for the first time in the TAPPS Vocal competition:

Amy Dauer, Fletcher Inzer, Ebony Johnson,

Alex Klima, Alfredo Ledet, Devin Medley,

Morgan Meadows, and Sarah Valdez.


• On March 16th, chemistry students competed in the

2010 Local Chemistry Olympiad Exam. Congratulations

to Nishant Kumar and Yasmine Afshar for moving on

to the national Chemistry Olympiad

Qualifying Exam sponsored by the Sabine-Neches

Section of the American Chemical Society.


• Kelly participated in the Texas Math and Science State

Meet in San Antonio on Saturday, March

20. In the 10th grade, Marisa Pinson placed ninth in math

and 2nd in science. She had the highest

chemistry score in the 10th grade. In the 11th grade,

Jacob Ryall was 4th in science, and Nishant

Kumar was 6th. Nishant had the highest biology score in the

11th grade. The team of Marisa,

Jacob, Nishant and Aleah Nichols placed

6th in science. Congratulations to all who competed.

Salimah participated in the American Valve and Hydrant sponsored

Leadership Speech Contest in Sugar Land this past weekend and placed

2nd in the regional competition.

Academic Challenge News

Eight teams competed in the Lamar-Texana Academic

Challenge on February 6. Kelly's team defeated

Nederland (240-105), Port Neches-Groves (210-160),

and Bridge City (260-155) to win First Place. Congratulations

to team members Joseph Sigur (Captain), Kristen Moor,

Jacob Ryall, Carla Lacson, and Mary Rizk who were awarded

$2000 scholarships to Lamar University.

Varsity Choir Goes to State

Congratulations to Varsity Choir who earned seven first

divisions (Superior Ratings) at the

TAPPS Houston Regional 5 A Competition. In the vocal

genre, an ensemble competes not


with other singers, but against a set of very high standards,

for a rating from a panel of

judges.

Kelly's singers showed the results of their hard work and

dedication to their art! The

following groups will advance to the state meet on April 16, 2010:

Varsity Choir, in both Large Ensemble and in Sight Reading,

St. Gregory Singers Sacred Ensemble,

St. Cecelia Singers Sacred Ensemble,

Kappelle Men Sacred Ensemble,

Salimah Jasani and Rajesh Reddy both seniors at Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School h

have been named finalists in the 2010 Annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Advancing from the semifinalist category, the two senior students received their

Certificates of Merit and both have the opportunity to compete for approximately 8,200

Merit Scholarships awards.

 

Bravo! Spanish and French students from Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School won top

honors in the 2010 Modern Language Competition held on Saturday, February 13th in

the Student Setzer Center at Lamar University. Kelly students competed in the

prose/poetry category where judges evaluated their interpretation, pronunciation,

fluency, intonation and preparation. Eighteen high schools participated in the event.

Nicah Caluag placed second in Spanish 1 poetry while Josh Barlow captured 1st place

honors in Spanish 2 poetry. Kelly students took the top two honors in both Spanish 3

and Spanish 4 poetry with Amy Hooper placing first and Marisa Pinson placing second in

Spanish 3 and Joseph Sigur placing first and Kathleen Wilson placing second in Spanish

4. In the category for native Spanish speakers, Giselle Medina placed second and Allen

Brannon placed third. Colleen Loza took first place honors in French 1. James Holcombe

placed third in French 3 and in the category for native French speakers, Karl Eric Vertil

placed first. There was also an art competition with a world heritage theme. Allen

Brannon placed second in Spanish Art with his painting of the Burgos Cathedral in Spain.

Also representing Kelly in the event were Rachel Barron, Augusta Broussard, Torrance

Cobb, Duyen Do, Ryan Donina, Raquel Haddad and Emilie Parma.

The English and Modern Languages Department and the Spanish Circle of Lamar

University have hosted this competition since 1998 to help students become aware of the

importance of knowing more than one language, to give the young learners an

opportunity to use their second or third language in a public setting to gain proficiency,

and to equip student participants with a better understanding of cultures.

Salimah Jasani competed in the American Legion State Oratory Competition February 15

in Kerrville, placing second and being the runner-up to attend the national competition in

Indianapolis, Indiana. The second place winner was awarded $1500! Salimah said the

competition was really intense. Congratulations to a job well done!

Marita Duesler has earned a second diamond degree of membership in the National

Forensic League. To recieve this honor, Mrs.Duesler attained a total of 3,009 points on

November 21, 2009, representing coaching success over several years. Under the

direction of Mrs.Duesler, students earned over 30,090 credit points. She will recieve

special recognition at Lincoln Financial Group/NFL National Speech and Debate

Tournament in Kanas City, Missouri in June of this year.

  • Congratulations to Rome Gonsoulin who has earned an interview with the Houston

    Regional Jefferson Scholars Committe. Rome was nominated to be a Jefferson

    Scholar at the University of Virginia for the fall of 2010. Good luck Rome!

 

Debate Results – Westfield High School Tournament

Debaters attended the last regular tournament of the year at Westfield High School

January 8-9 and came home with several trophies.

All attending participated in Student Congress rather than debating and Joseph Sigur

advanced in Student Congress to the semi-Super Congress.

In individual events, Josh Barlow advanced to semifinals in both Novice Prose and Novice

Poetry, continuing to the final round in Poetry, placing 6th overall.

Salimah Jasani competed in Domestic Extemp for the first time and advanced all the way

to the final round in the Championship division, placing 4th overall with 98 total

contestants. Not bad for the first time in the event!


The Kelly Debate team beat the weather to Comeaux High School in Lafayette, Louisiana

this weekend and once again came home successful!

In Student Congress, Joseph Sigur placed 3rd overall and Elisha Lalani placed 5th!

The team was also well represented in semifinals and finals of individual events.

Josh Barlow advanced in both Declamation and Jr. Oral Interp.

Salena Parker advanced in Sr. Oral Interp.

Bryant Windham advanced in Sr. Extemporaneous Speaking.

Joseph Sigur advanced in both Sr. Extemp and Sr. Oral Interp,

moving on to place 6th in Sr. Extemp!

Salena Parker also placed 6th in Advanced Lincoln-Douglas Debate.

Academic Challenge Team News

Kelly Wins 2nd Place in the Channel 6 Challenge

The Academic Challenge team of Rajesh Reddy, Jacob Ryall, Joseph Sigur,

and Kathleen Wilson, and coached by Mrs. Lee, advanced to the finals after

defeating Buna (195-130), Legacy Christian (185-105), and West Brook (175-

100) in earlier rounds. In the final match, however, the team lost to Vidor

High School in a hard-fought competition. These students represented our

school well and are to be congratulated for their hard work and

determination. Air dates for the last three rounds are January 9 and January

23 at 11:30 a.m., and January 30 at 11 a.m. on KFDM TV Channel 6.

Kelly Participated in “The People Speak” Debates

The Kelly debate team is once again busily working on the People Speak

Debates and service projects associated with the debate.

They are working to repeat a trip to New York this summer for the third

year. The topic for the fall is “Resolved: When it cannot do both, the

United Nations should prioritize poverty reduction over combating climate change.”

The Kelly team of Caroline Brewton, Salimah Jasani, Joe Sigur, and Salena Parker,

along with moderators Evan Kirschner and Bryant Windham, presented

the debate to the student body and the Mayor of Bevil Oaks,

Becky Ford, on November 11, 2009.

The team will also be working on their projects, the main one

being recycling at the school, and creating blogs and PSAs for the competition.

The next debate will be held in the spring. Please plan to attend to see the

Kelly debaters in action.

DEBATE NEWS

Bryant Windham won the American Legion Post 33 Oratory

Contest November 14, receiving a $500 scholarship. He competes again

in January for the next level. Salimah Jasani won first place in the

American Legion Post 817 Oratory Competition November 20,

winning a $1,000 scholarship. She will now join Bryant Windham

in the next level of competition on January 16, 2010.


Kelly Debaters Succeed at West Orange-Stark Tournament


The West Orange-Stark mini-tournament was held on October 31,

and Kelly debaters excelled in all events!

In Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Salena Parker placed third,

and Josh Barlow tied for 5th. In the novice division,

Evan Kirschner placed first, and Torij Fuhrman tied for third.

Salena and Josh both received points toward state qualification.

In Student Congress, all three contestants from Kelly placed

and have state qualifying points. Bryant Windham placed 5th,

with Salimah Jasani and Nat Lombardo placing 7th and 8th, respectively.

In Domestic Extemp, Bryant Windham and Nat Lombardo

advanced to semis, with Bryant going on to finals and placing 5th,

receiving another state qualifying point.

Dulles High School Debate Tournament Results


Members of the Kelly Debate Team attended the

Dulles High School Tournament November 20-21.

Josh Barlow competed in the semifinals in Poetry.

B ryant Windham had another successful tournament

in Student Congress, placing 4th overall

and coming very close to TFA state qualification. The

next tournament will be December 4-5 at Comeaux

High School in Lafayette.

Kelly Claims 2 of 40 All-Area Choir Members

Congratulations to Beau Autin and Devin Medley, who

are newly-auditioned members of the TMEA All-Area

choir! In the third round of auditions on November 19

at Westbrook HS, against the best singers in the Golden

Triangle, Hardin County, and Baytown-Houston areas,

the All-State Choir. They are among the top 40 singers

in our area and are now going on to the final audition

Jefferson Scholars Program Nominee

Senior Rome Gonsoulin has been selected as Kelly High School's Jefferson

Scholars Program nominee for

the University of Virginia. Her outstanding academic performance,

standardized test scores, and involvement

in Kelly organizations gave her this distinguished recognition.

National Merit Semifinalists

 

Congratulations are in order. Rajesh Reddy, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Keshava Reddy, is a

National Merit Semifinalist. He has consistently taken the most rigorous classes that we

offer. By graduation, Raj will have completed 9 AP classes. He is President of Mu Alpha

Theta active in NHS, Key Club, Student Council, and varsity Tennis. Salimah Jasani, also

a National Merit Semifinalist, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Karam Ali. She plans to

attend the University of Texas and pursue law. Enrolled in 8 AP classes, Salimah is also

President of Debate and is active in Mock Trial, Drama, and NHS.

 

The Kelly debate team attended its first debate tournament of the year at Elkins High

School in Missouri City this past weekend - September 12-13..

Kelly had 9 semifinal entries in individual events with two moving on to finals.

Joseph Sigur and Bryant Windham advanced in Foreign and Domestic Extemp

(respectively).

Salena Parker and Josh Barlow advanced in prose.

Salena Parker and Salimah Jasani advanced in Poetry.

Bryant Windham, Salimah Jasani, and Joseph Sigur advance in Impromptu Speaking

with

Jospeh placing 6th and Salimah placing 4th in the finals.

Bryant Windham advanced to the Super Congress round of Student Congress placing 6th

overall and receiving a state qualifying point.

In Lincoln-Douglas championship debate, Salena Parker advanced to the octofinal round.
